TBSO with Consortium Aurora Borealis

St. Paul's United Church 349 Waverley St, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Consortium Aurora Borealis is pleased to present a special concert this coming Saturday, December 5, at 8 p.m. (pre-concert talk a bit earlier than usual, at 7:15 p.m.), at St. Paul's United Church, Thunder Bay, featuring the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, 28 players strong, as its guest ensemble. The full complement of woodwinds, horns, trumpets and timpani join its string section. We are very excited that the TBSO has returned to perform in our series for a third year in a row, and look forward to future collaborations. Last year’s concert was an overwhelming success, and this season’s presentation is sure to be received equally enthusiastically.
Come out and enjoy delightful music of the innovative 18th-century Mannheim School, commencing with a symphony by Cannabich, who was a good friend of Mozart, and culminating in mature symphonies by the Viennese composers Haydn and Mozart, which were influenced by revolutionary techniques developed by the Mannheim court orchestra, of which Cannabich had been Kapellmeister. The evening’s music is diverse, though it falls within a mere 17-year period (1772-1789, the latest work coinciding with the storming of the Bastille and the start of the French Revolution). It includes Carl Stamitz’s warmly lyrical Concerto for clarinet and violin, with soloists Peter Shackleton and Katie Stevens, Haydn’s Symphony No. 92 subtitled “Oxford”, and Mozart’s noble Symphony No. 40 in G minor, whose final movement starts with a so-called “Mannheim rocket” ascending theme.
The TBSO will perform under the direction of dynamic young guest conductor Mélanie Léonard, known for her youthful vibrancy and a distinct sense of style. This concert is dedicated to the memory of the sublime Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on the anniversary of his death on December 5, 1791. We hope you will join us!
Tickets are available at the door.
