Consortium Aurora Borealis’ Season Opener — The Brilliance of Borealis with The Golden Violin

Consortium Aurora Borealis opens its 39th concert season, “The Brilliance of Borealis” with “The Golden Violin.” Thomas Cosbey, concertmaster of the Thunder Bay Symphony, joined by pianist Heather Morrison, will perform exquisite music from the Romantic Era, including virtuosic showpieces.
On offer is a Brahms violin sonata, plus appealing short works by Schumann, Fauré, Debussy, Kreisler, Bloch, Sarasate, and others. Cosbey “astounds with dextrous skill… masterful and passionate.”
Saturday, September 16, 2017, 8:00 p.m, at St. Paul’s United Church, 349 Waverley Street, Thunder Bay. Informative pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m. by Michelle Zapf-Bélanger. The church is handicapped-accessible (elevator).

Oras Chamber Choir: All-Night Vigil

The Oras Chamber Choir presents their third concert of the 2016-17 season on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at 8:00 PM at St. Paul's United Church in Thunder Bay. In this concert, the OCC will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff's profound and haunting All-Night Vigil, Op. 37.
During the 2016-2017 concert season, the Oras Chamber Choir celebrates 70 years of creating music in the Thunder Bay region and across Canada. This concert is the last of three this season to mark and celebrate this anniversary.

Oras Chamber Choir: Celebrating 70 Seasons

The Oras Chamber Choir presents their first concert of the 2016-17 season on Saturday, January 21st, 2017 at 8:00 PM at St. Paul's United Church. In this concert the OCC will perform unaccompanied choral masterworks by Byrd, Poulenc, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, and Einojuhani Rautavaara.
During the 2016-2017 concert season, the Oras Chamber Choir celebrates 70 years of creating music in the Thunder Bay region and across Canada. This concert is the first of four this season to mark and celebrate this anniversary.

BOCCHERINI: A NIGHT IN MADRID
Escape to Spain with Consortium Aurora Borealis in “A Night in Madrid”! Beat the chill and come out to hear an exhilarating fandango for guitar and strings with a concerto-like virtuoso cello part, quintets evoking street scenes of Madrid, and more. Colour, grace, and special effects will abound. The concert’s Spanish-inspired music was written by Haydn’s contemporary Luigi Boccherini, a classical era composer and virtuosic cellist who left Italy as a youth to work under royal patronage in Madrid. Performing are Joseph Roy, guitar; Thomas Cosbey and Iain McKay, violin; Mathilde Bernard, viola; Marc Palmquist and Sonya Nanos, cello.

Consortium Aurora Borealis Concert – Baroque Masterpieces

Consortium Aurora Borealis presents “Baroque Masterpieces”, its annual concert of concertos and other music from this well-loved period. The programme includes oboe concertos by Albinoni and Marcello, J. S. Bach’s celebrated Suite in B minor for flute and strings, two short string sinfonias by Vivaldi, a Handel opera overture, and a pair of lively Tambourins by Rameau, performed by soloists Colleen Kennedy, oboe and Doris Dungan, flute, with string ensemble and harpsichord. Come and support our fine local professional musicians!

Grammy and Juno winning Canadian violin virtuoso James Ehnes returns to Thunder Bay after 10 years for a very special event. Ehnes is celebrating his 40th birthday in style – with a national recital tour! Ehnes and his frequent musical collaborator, powerhouse pianist Andrew Armstrong, dazzle in a program that consists of works by George Frederick Handel, Ludwig van Beethoven, and a new work written for Ehnes by award-winning composer and Vancouver Symphony Music Director Bramwell Tovey.

Oras Chamber Choir: Duruflé Requiem

The Oras Chamber Choir will present their final concert of the 2015-16 season on Saturday, June 4th at 8:00 PM. In this concert the OCC will perform Maurice Duruflé's Requiem with internationally acclaimed concert organist Pétur Sakari from Finland. This monumental and dramatic setting of the Requiem text is a true masterpiece among twentieth century choral works. Also programmed are complementary works by Arvo Pärt and Leevi Madetoja.

Consortium Aurora Borealis Concert – Organist William Maddox “What Pipes!”

Consortium Aurora Borealis presents the concert “What Pipes”, as virtuoso organist William Maddox, back by popular demand, pulls out all the stops for a colourful display on St. Paul’s United Church’s splendid Casavant organ. This instrument will be shown off in great style, with a varied programme spanning 300 years and including music by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Franck, Guilmant, Widor, Vierne and more.
The concert takes place on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 8:00 p.m. at St. Paul`s United Church, 349 Waverley Street, with an informative pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m. by Fred Jones. The church is handicapped-accessible (elevator).
