Consortium Aurora Borealis Concert – The Enchanting Flute: Doris Dungan & Heather Morrison

Consortium Aurora Borealis launches its Ruby Anniversary Season, “A Dazzling Celebration”, with the concert “The Enchanting Flute”. Flautist Doris Dungan, joined by pianist Heather Morrison, will present an enticing variety of music spanning 150 years, ranging from idyllic lyricism to flashy display. On offer are works by Kuhlau, Poulenc, Prokofiev, and Borne’s romantic Fantasie Brillante on themes from Bizet’s Carmen. It is fitting that Dungan and Morrison, well-loved performers with Consortium since its very earliest days, be the ones to open its 40th year of exceptional music-making.

Organ Concert

Kathy Fisher will be performing a recital on St. Paul's beautiful Casavant Organ. Tickets are $20 for Adults and $15 for Students. Tickets are available at Calico's, Music World and St. Paul's Church office.

Oras Chamber Choir: Duruflé’s Requiem

The Oras Chamber Choir performs Maurice Duruflé's immense, enchanting, and sublime Requiem with conductor Erik Johannes Riekko and organist Ian Sadler on Saturday, May 12th at 8:00 PM.
A masterpiece of twentieth century music, Duruflé synthesizes authentic Gregorian chant, Renaissance inspired counterpoint, and rich impressionistic harmony to create a work of deep musical profundity and enigmatic beauty, in a style uniquely his own.
Also programmed are complementary works by the Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt and English composer Herbert Howells.

Choirs for Hope

You are invited to attend “Choirs for Hope”, an evening of music and song focussing on positive messages for people impacted by cancer.
Established choirs of Thunder Bay have come together and will provide an opportunity for reflection and hope through an amazing collection of songs. These songs support cancer survivors, their families, and those currently living with cancer.
Donation envelopes will be available at the door. Tax receipts available for donations over $20. Proceeds support the Northern Cancer Fund.

Consortium Aurora Borealis presents its annual all-Baroque concert with an Italian theme. Back by popular demand, virtuoso violinist Jeremy Bell performs “Baroque Brilliance,” an exciting programme of dazzling concerti and sonatas by Vivaldi, Tartini, Locatelli, Leclair, and Legrenzi, who were themselves virtuoso violinists. He is joined by Consortium’s expanded string ensemble and harpsichord. Consortium Aurora Borealis Concert – Oboe Virtuosi at the German Courts

Consortium Aurora Borealis presents “Oboe Virtuosi at the German Courts,” celebrating the rich sound of three double-reed woodwind instruments performing together. The royal and ducal courts of 18th-century Germany were seats of rich musical culture; the concert connects us to celebrated oboists of that time and place. This programme of Baroque music with two oboes and bassoon returns Consortium to its historic roots. Works by Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann, Quantz, C.P.E. Bach, Heinichen, and Zelenka. Colleen Kennedy and Gwen Buttemer, oboe; Harold Wevers, bassoon; with Marc Palmquist, cello and Elizabeth Ganiatsos, harpsichord.

Oras Chamber Choir: Threshold of Night

The Oras Chamber Choir presents their first concert of the 2017-18 season on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at 8:00 PM at St. Paul's United Church in Thunder Bay.
In this concert, the OCC will perform unaccompanied choral works with themes related to sleep, dreams, existence, and death. Included in the program are William Croft's Burial Sentences and Eleanor Daley's lyrical, melancholic, and intensly personal Requiem, as well as works by Eric Whitacre, Thomas Tallis, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Tarik O'Regan.

Organ/Saxophone Concert

On October 24, St. Paul’s United Church, 349 Waverley Street, will resound with the sounds of the magnificent Casavant pipe organ, with saxophone! The Gordon and Joan Cameron Organ Trust is bringing two renowned musicians from Winnipeg to present a most unusual concert: organist Lottie Enns-Braun and saxophonist Allen Harrington, both on the faculty of the University of Manitoba. Enns-Braun says the programme will include: Bach, jazz-style, folk, a piece about the night sky, and more in this unique collaboration of two great musicians. Sounds delightful and intriguing, something for everyone! Seven-thirty pm on October 24. Tickets $20 and $15, available at the church office (345-5864), Calico Coffeehouse, and Music World.

Consortium Aurora Borealis is thrilled to welcome back the highly-acclaimed Ensemble Made in Canada, joined by guest violinist Scott St. John, in “Passionate Piano Quintets”, with another display of sweeping romanticism, impeccable technique, and “a dazzling blaze of virtuoso musicianship.” Having created a sensation in 2015 with “Passionate Piano Quartets”, they will now perform quintets for piano and strings by Schumann and Dvořák, as well as a short Schumann piece for cello and piano.
Angela Park, piano; Elissa Lee, Scott St. John violin; Sharon Wei, viola; Rachel Mercer, cello. These five passionately-committed performing artists have garnered rave reviews, and project warmth, joy and enthusiasm. “Bold and stylish…impressive, elegant interpretations”. This is a season highlight, not to be missed!
