TBSO HOUSE 2: National Winner MCGRATH & SCHUBERT

This concert is a newly-formed collaboration between the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and the TBSO to present new artists breaking into major careers. When the winner of the 2019 Grand Award is chosen, a major solo work will be chosen for this exciting program. Jim McGrath’s Suite No. 2 will run the gamut from upbeat to downright eerie, and Schubert’s beautiful, crystalline and powerful Fifth Symphony closes the concert.

Young composer Christopher Cerrone has written a gripping piece for strings that finishes in a frenzy. The world premiere of Patrick Horn’s Tango Funk with solo bassist Martin Blanchet builds momentum and playfulness. Then Damian Rivers-Moore is featured in Christos Hatzis’ Winter Solstice. The evening ends with Beethoven’s thrilling Second Symphony.

Dulcisono Women’s Choir Presents Mozart’s Sparrow Mass

Dulcisono Women Choir presents Mozart's Sparrow Mass in collaboration with Thunder Bay Community Orchestra and will premiere Bluebird, commissioned by the choir and composed by Dr. Sean Kim as a companion piece to the Sparrow Mass. 
This diverse concert will also include small ensemble presentations by members of the choir, including a piece written by one of our members. We are excited to feature Carol MacDonald, our wonderful accompanist, as she plays First Arabesque by Claude Debussy.
This will be an exciting conclusion to our performance season that you will not want to miss!

The TBSO is so much more than an orchestra. It’s a gathering of virtuosos, an army of generals! The program starts with Jocelyn Morlock’s poignant tribute to the death of 15-year-old Amanda Todd, followed by a moving Élégie by Fauré. Next, Principal Clarinet Peter Shackleton, who’s been a soloist with both the Toronto Symphony and the NAC Orchestra, will amaze you in Rossini’s sparkling Variations. The evening closes with Mozart’s heroic Symphony No. 39, performed by 30 soloists: your own TBSO!

Experience the spirited Vivaldi Gloria like never before! Thunder Bay’s marvelous choral ensemble and soloists perform this exultant masterpiece. The main course is accented with a spicy appetizer, Astor Piazzolla’s tango-inspired homage to the Four Seasons, performed by Concertmaster Tom Cosbey. Piazzolla and Vivaldi lived 250 years apart, but their music has a Latin feel making them a perfect match! A genuine extravaganza!

Recently-appointed to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Simon Rivard returns to conduct masterpieces showcasing his skills and the orchestra’s artistry: Ravel’s delicate Le Tombeau de Couperin and Mendelssohn’s dazzling “Italian” Symphony. Two years after stepping in on short notice in Brahms’ Violin Concerto and saving the day, Gregory Lewis returns to his hometown to perform the show-stopping Tzigane by Ravel. An experience not to be missed!

Our annual December concert featuring the Youth Orchestra, Junior Strings, and Thunder Bay Conservatory of Music Community Orchestra. Works by Mozart, Matt Sellick, Tchaikovsky, and Handel.
