TBSO presents Mozart and Mendelssohn

Hilldale Lutheran Church 321 Hilldale Rd, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Mozart and Mendelssohn
18 March 2022 - 7:30 pm Hilldale Lutheran Church
Tonight’s concert features three tour de force composers, as well as one of TBSO’s own as soloist. Hear the talented Kristy Tucker playing Mozart’s beloved bassoon concerto.
Jim McGrath: Suite for Strings
W. A Mozart: Concerto for Bassoon in B-flat major, K. 191
Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11
Featuring
Paul Haas, conductor
Kristy Tucker, bassoon
We start with McGrath’s Suite for Strings with features an eclectic mix of driving and percussive, lyrically delicate and intentionally cinematic music. Mozart’s wonderful Bassoon Concerto features TBSO Principal Bassoon Kristy Tucker. Mozart draws out the many characters from bold and comedic to expressive and tender, which makes the bassoon so popular with audiences. Mendelssohn Symphony No. 1 combines the young composer’s love of both Mozart classical style and structure and Bach’s baroque counterpoint. With this piece, he confirms his precocious brilliance.

TBSO presents Schubert & Farrenc

Hilldale Lutheran Church 321 Hilldale Rd, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada

Schubert & Farrenc
11 March 2022 - 7:30 pm Hilldale Lutheran Church
The TBSO looks forward to seeing you in person again for this remarkable concert!
William Grant Still: Mother and Child
Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 2 in B flat
Louise Farrenc: Symphony No. 2, Op. 35
Featuring
Evan Mitchell, conductor
The beautiful, Mother and Child by William Grant Still is built on a deep, gentle tonal foundation. It speaks in a consistently tender voice throughout variations of intensity. With rich layers of strings varying from languid and introspective to brilliantly clear, one cannot help but contemplate the complex relationship between mother and child.
The timeless genius of Schubert’s Symphony no 2 in B flat is characteristic Schubert: tuneful and balanced. Intricately textured, with variations of theme and tone throughout, this is a dramatic and sometimes intense piece.
Primarily a pianist, Farrenc composed a number of pieces for piano though wrote only 3 Symphonies. Her Symphony no. 2 in D major treats us to a fresh, lyrical and delightfully playful experience. The writing for woodwinds in particular, is colorful and imaginative. A true breath of fresh air.
