“In an ideal world I’d see you eliminated. In this world I need you more than anyone.”
An explosive human drama where rage and intolerance collide with compassion, New Noise Productions is proud to present Canadian David Gow’s CHERRY DOCS.
Mike Downey (Andrew Paulsen), a white racist skinhead, kicks to death an immigrant on a street in Toronto. His weapon is his steel-toed boots, cherry Doc Martens. Danny Dunkelman (Chisholm Pothier), a Jewish liberal humanist, has just been court-appointed to represent him. Forced to come up with a defense and work together, an intense relationship develops between the two men as they explore their emotional and intellectual differences. When the rituals of religion hold your life together, what happens when you begin to crumble? When skinhead hatred gets tested, is there any room for humanity? And just what does “tough on crime” mean, anyway?
Forced to exam the limits of their own beliefs, and the demons underlying them, they push each other through the chasm that separates them, and connect, as two human beings.
Complex and profound, CHERRY DOCS is a provocative exploration of the inescapable presence of hatred in our society. The ninety-minute production brings you to the edge of your seat with demanding, sharply focused characters. CHERRY DOCS explores important moral themes with its timely and ultimately revealing story. David Gow asks us to confront the hatred within ourselves and our society. CHERRY DOCS digs even deeper, peeling back the characters’ layers of protection. Everything is laid bare in an unblinking examination of hatred, with consequences simultaneously gratifying, beautiful, and heartbreaking.
Featuring two of Thunder Bay’s finest actors, and directed by Michael Sobota, CHERRY DOCS is the fourth summer staging from New Noise Productions. New Noise is an experienced company that intends to provide an alternative to what is normally offered in the diverse local theatre scene. It brings a new brand of edgy, polished stagings to summer audiences, building on the record breaking success of TRUE DIRECTIONS (2011), the smash hit MELVIN GOES TO DINNER (2012), and the critically acclaimed TAPE (2013).
