Dj Arctic Biography: By Royal – T
From the bustling college city of London, to the frigid shores of Lake Superior in the frozen tundra city of Thunder Bay, DJ Arctic has been leaving his mark on Ontario hip hop scenes for twenty years. It is not just butter smooth cuts, however, that define his legacy. He is a prolific freestyle battle MC, he has recorded a plethora of songs featuring his trademark rapid fire flow and booming delivery, and he is a veteran performer with incredible stage presence that has seen him open for some of hip hop’s greatest legends, while also being invited to showcase his talents at prominent festivals.
At the tender age of 16, Arctic began to hone his craft on the turntables thanks to an amateur set up at his high school friend’s basement. It was in those early days that a budding DJ Arctic was born and a lifelong passion for turntablism would ignite his quest to become a professional master of the one’s and two’s. Beginning with nothing more than one turntable and an amp that belonged to his father, he made the most of his primitive set up. Putting his natural creativity to work, he would use the volume knob as a fader to turn down the volume in order to cut out the sound of the record being pulled back, he would then scratch his go-to 12 inch: DJ Rectangle’s “Ultimate Breaks”. A year later, Arctic would acquire his high school friend’s turntables and mixer, and over the next few years he began to develop his scratching abilities in his parents’ basement. He began to collect records at a torrent pace, deepening his crates with every visit to his local record store. On one visit, a notable local DJ who worked at the store, noticing the frequency of Arctic’s purchases but not recalling him from the local scene, mentioned “You’re like Mr Anonymous”. Lacking a DJ moniker, Arc took the “anonymous” and added “record collector”, later shortening it to the acronym “A.R.C”, and eventually to just “Arc”. Shortly down the road, he would begin MC’ing under the name “MC Destroya”, and would later consolidate his DJ and MC names to “Arctic” in homage to his bitterly cold, newly adopted hometown of Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario.
From age 19 to 20, Arctic began DJ’ing at local house parties in London, Ontario where he was well received as an untapped talent. He then moved to Thunder Bay to attend University and linked up with fellow University DJ “Droid” to produce, and host, a scratch based radio show called “Channel 6, Skritchy Scratchy” where they exhibited their abilities online on Lakehead University’s own radio station (now CILU 102.7 FM). A year later, Droid moved on, and Arctic changed the show’s name to “The Realness” adding MC “Snype One” as a cohost and later on replacing him with, now well renown, MC “Royal-T” before taking the reigns himself after Royal-T left for greener pastures . Arctic would host The Realness for 8 years, becoming Lakehead’s number one rated radio show.
It was in Thunder Bay, that Arctic began to hone his MC skills, eventually becoming a member of the Muthatruckaz, Jacks of All Trades, and finally a member of one of Canada’s most infamous hip hop crews: Deepcave Records based of Winnipeg. If you’ve ever the met the man, chances are you’ve heard him spit an effortless freestyle at breakneck speed, describing exactly what’s going on in the moment with a surgeon’s precision. It’s a skill that he has honed daily since he was teen, eventually becoming a regular in the early Ontario freestyle battle scene. Arctic is a six time MC battle champion of Thunder Bay at a time when the Thunder Bay scene produced some of Canada’s most decorated battlers. He has also done well in battles all over Ontario including one judged by legendary MC’s Juice and Pumpkinhead at the Canadian DMC finals in Ottawa in 2006.
By 2002, Arctic became confidently polished as both a DJ and an MC, regularly competing and doing well in battles for both disciplines, including placing multiple times in the once infamous yearly local DMC competitions, and competing in the group competition at the Canadian DMC finals in Ottawa in 2006. While in Thunder Bay, he also hosted his own weekly hip hop night, and was a resident DJ at three different bars.
Arctic eventually linked up with fellow ambitious MC’s and performed at multiple shows, including hundreds of local jams as well as opening for major artists such as Royce Da 5’9, Naughty by Nature, Choclair, Classified, Kyprios, DL Incognito. In 2005, Arctic traveled to Calgary with Royal-T and Lev to headline a sold out hall show that received rave reviews. In 2007, he was invited to Winnipeg for the infamous “Deepcity Holla” festival where he shared the bill with New York’s Masta Ace and Wordsworth along with California’s Subtitle, and over 20 other prominent acts from all over Canada and the U.S.
After eight years of making his mark in Thunder Bay, Arctic moved back to his hometown of London where he immediately made an impact on the local scene. He is currently heading out on tour with Evil Ebineezer . He has opened up for Obie Trice , Ghettosocks, Fresh Kils, Noah 23, Merkules, Madchild, Prevail, Moka Only, Snak the Ripper, Chuckie Campbell, Twiztid, Royce the 5’9, Evil Ebineerzer, and many others.
In the future, expect to see Arctic as a regular opening act for big names touring through London, while also entering renown DJ competitions such as the DMC’s and the Redbull 3Style competition. Arctic has also had a lifelong interest in electronics and technology, has many years of education in the field, and currently works as an “Electronic Technologist”. He plans to use this background to invent new DJ equipment and hopes to find prosperity in this venture, while aiding in preserving the dying art of true turntablism.
