Educator, composer and producer Olivia Korkola feels at home in a number of musical genres. Alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Music (Boston, MA) Korkola stands out amongst modern fiddlers for her versatility and depth. Olivia has studied under a plethora of pathbreaking musicians; most notably and dear to her being Olga Medvedeva, Darol Anger (Tony Rice Unit, David Grisman Quintet) and Matt Glaser (Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Bob Dylan). Olivia holds their mastery of the craft in the highest regard.
Korkola’s debut record Playing in Traffic (2010) landed her a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Young Performer of the Year at the age of 16, one year after taking home the title of Minnesota State Fiddle Champion in Cotton, MN. Olivia spent the last half decade in Nashville, TN, and now proudly lives and performs in Thunder Bay.
Atmospheric & dramatic: The music of Jake Vaillant is heavy laden with unforgiving poetry and unabashed gallows humour, which Vaillant weaves into songs that are honest portraits of local lore and universal tribulations. The folkloric content and subject matter oftentimes runs deep and dark, but it is never without a glimmer of hope. It is a hope that is weathered but undeniable─ enduring with a tenacious vigor.
Vaillant has been an active member of Thunder Bay’s musical Community for well over a decade and his is tenure as a writer and composer has seen him perform with some of the finest talent the city has to offer. His backing “band”─ sometimes referred to as, The Town─ is really more of a ethereally assembled collective of collaborators that have joined Jake over the years in mounting, festivals, concerts and mixed media art events. Historically, Jake’s happenings have featured a bill of prominent local acts, whom after performing with their own groups will have members featured in his culminating stage show. The ever shifting cast of The Dirty Old Town means that no two performances are ever alike.
