Monomyth / Dog Day
June 17, 2012 @ 5:00 pm
$5Review of Monomyth by Tobias Rochman (Weird Canada):
Like most modern acts, Monomyth’s palette is wide. Several seeds are sewn to create the over all, glue-heavy, floral print, guitar-jungle, info-age, post-mailorder decoupage. The A-side is all hooky, ramshackle, Flying Nun, weirdo pop anthems wherein several young men all sing the same thing at the same time. Ze B-side is more textural, very ’90s, very foggy British haze-gaze psychedelia. Basic beats scale back the cheese and slather on ze butter. It’s pretty enough to be popular but you get the impression they are “taking the piss†rather than “taking a pissâ€. Hopefully all the prospective labels out there get ze memo about ze demo. Halifax always has between 2-4 2,000 – 4,000 (*) good bands at any given time. In my opinion Monomyth are on the tippy-top of that heap.
Review of Dog Day by Michael Deane (Weird Canada):
Adding salience, excitement and nuance to pop is like having a couple-based band that isn’t nauseating; it’s a tough thing to do, and if you ever need some tips on how to do it, look no further than Dog Day. On Deformer, interesting melodies are always on the cusp of sweetness, but they never go full-on, instead they take the infectious side of college rock and marry it to interesting textures and unexpected directions, then propel it with earnest energy. Not that you need to feel guilty about listening to pop music, but this has enough substance, roughness and ingenuity that you don’t have to justify it to anyone.
