Ugandan ensemble Kinobe & Soul Beat Africa to perform in concert at Jacks in Thunder Bay
THUNDER BAY – Ugandan ensemble Kinobe & Soul Beat Africa will perform in concert at Jacks in Thunder Bay on Thursday, August 13. Kinobe is a leading figure in Ugandan and world music, performing what Zina Saro-Wiwa of the BBC has described as “some of the most exquisite music coming out of Africa today.”  As a five-piece ensemble, Kinobe & Soul Beat Africa combine the styles and instruments of traditional Ugandan folk music with guitars and elements of West African music to create a unique sound that is at once innovative and rooted in African tradition.
 
Kinobe has been performing internationally since the age of ten, when he represented Uganda at the World Children’s Forum in Germany.  Since then, he has traveled throughout Africa and Europe, playing alongside some of the most prominent figures in African music today. He makes many of his own instruments, teaches African music all over the world, and is deeply involved in youth outreach programs in Africa.
Kinobe & Soul Beat Africa have received support from the Alliance Française for a year-long tour of the United States and Canada, beginning in February 2009.  Decade-long musical collaborators, they have toured the African continent and various countries in Europe.  This is their first tour of the U.S.  Their new self-titled CD was released this spring by Multicultural Media (www.multiculturalmedia.com).
