Drop the Mic TBay Karaoke Contest
October 26, 2019 @ 10:00 pm
No CoverMagnus Theatre and City Wide Sound Present Drop the Mic TBAY Karaoke Contest
Get ready for the first karaoke contest of its kind to hit Thunder Bay this fall! Five local venues will be holding simultaneous contests over a six-week period starting at the end of October. Finalists from all five venues will then compete for the top prize, and major bragging rights, on the Magnus Theatre stage on January 11, 2020.
The participating venues are The Foundry, The Bar, The Itai, The Fastlane, and The Royalton. Each venue will host the contest on a different night of the week where two semi-finalists will be chosen each week at each venue. These semi-finalists will then compete at each venue on week six for a chance at two spots into the finals. The top 10 finalists will meet center stage at Magnus Theatre to compete for the grand prize.
There is no entrance fee and participants are not required to pre-register. Amateurs and professionals alike are welcome to show up on contest nights, sign up with the karaoke host, and slam down their singing savvy! Weekly themes are part of the contests strategy to push singers to their limits and out of their comfort zones and costumes are encouraged.
Weekly winners will be chosen by the karaoke host, with a panel of expert judges selecting the top two in the final round on week six at each venue. Contestants will be scored on vocal talent, originality, stage presence, overall impression, and audience vote via survey.
“We’re thrilled to be co-organizing this event,” says Magnus Theatre artistic director Thom Currie. “There’s a lot of great talent in Thunder Bay and we have an incredible stage where local singers can really showcase their stuff, just really turn it up a level.”
The top two finalists from each venue will receive prizes from the venues, ranging from a BBQ to cash, event tickets, and more. The winner will receive a grand prize at Magnus Theatre.
“This is such an incredible collaboration between Magnus Theatre, City Wide Sound and five local venues to provide a contest that has never been attempted this way before,” says Amanda Mihalus, owner of City Wide Sound.
“We are so excited to see Thunder Bay’s talent come out to try a different venue, compete for prizes and an opportunity to perform on the big stage at Magnus. This will be a show that you don’t want to miss because when Thunder Bay is given an opportunity to produce, they bring their best!”
