CARLY WAITO
Microgeographica
13th Feb 2015 – 14th Mar 2015

national/international-painting/film installation
Microgeographica is a solo exhibition of new works by Toronto-based artist Carly Waito (born in Manitouwadge and raised in Thunder Bay). Through detail-rich oil paintings, graphite illustrations and a projected video work, Microgeographica showcases Waito’s ongoing series exploring the unique beauty of precious mineral specimens. As a painter, Waito pursues her inspiration, with a focus towards geology, geometry, light, and a sense of wonder and curiosity. These themes are uniquely encompassed by the tiny mineral specimens which have become her particular obsession. With each finely detailed oil painting, Waito focuses the eye on a specimen’s particular qualities, showing the beauty and magic that is present even in nature’s smallest parts, if one looks closely enough and with a curious mind. Waito has exhibited nationally/internationally and her work is held in private collections in Europe, Australia and North America. Waito has been featured in several major publications and is a recipient of grants from the Ontario Arts Council. Join us for the Gala Opening Reception Fri. Feb.13 @7-10pm featuring a ferocity of art with 3 new exhibitions and special one night only musical performance by Nancy Pants of Montreal- [w/Adam Waito of Adam & The Amethysts/Miracle Fortress] Lots of catered and cool winter refreshments, artist talks and more! Shows run until March 14.

DAGMARA GENDA
Panorama/ Corrupted Animals

national/international-drawing/painting/installatio
Internationally known visual/installation artist, Dagmara Genda’s presentation of an immersive and chaotic nature infused exhibition is comprised of architectural installation, drawing and collage that addresses cliches of the Canadian landscape.
Dagmara Genda’s work recombines forms to propose new ways of seeing the old. She is interested in dichotomies, such as nature and culture, and chaos and order, which she subsequently attempts to dislodge by rearranging found images into new constructions. In each of her works, she questions how we come to identify something as what it is, and explores its many potential permutations. Genda, graduated with an MA from the London Consortium, Birkbeck University of London, and an MFA from Western University. Genda, is a recipient of many creation grants/ awards/commissions, was recently awarded the Canada Council’s International Residencies grant to London England and has shown extensively nationally/internationally throughout Canada and the United States. It should be mentioned that this particular series is in fact inspired by Genda’s childhood experiences in Thunder Bay where she lived for five years after immigrating from Poland. Shows run until March 14.

NANCY PANTS
Live Music, Montreal
13th Feb 2015-7-10PM
Montreal’s Nancy Pants are set to unleash their debut full-length album ‘Total Nancy Pants’ on Thunder Bay! Friday Feb 13 at Defsup, for one night only, and you’re invited. Calling themselves a “dirty pop band,” Nancy Pants reintroduces a few familiar Can-con faces with Ohara Hale (Mori, Ohara), Adam Waito (formerly of Thunder Bay-you know him-Adam & the Amethysts, Silverkeys, Miracle Fortress) and Jeremy MacCuish (Parlovr, Nanimal, Smokes) comprising the lineup. Formed en route to an indie comic book convention, the trio recorded a five-song demo after just one band practice. Now, their repertoire has grown into the 11-song collection that is Total Nancy Pants. A recent press release describes their sound as “teenage ’60s garage pop and weird ’90s punk,” which pretty much nails it and Exclaim magazine says “this marks an assured and enchanting debut for this Montreal trio, and cements them as yet another Montreal band to look out for! So come out and get dancy with Nancy Pants as the best part of Montreal visits the gallery for an event within an event filled with 3 new exhibitions of art/music/talks and catered and cool refreshments.
