Magnus Theatre is very proud to present BLOCKED, a play about bullying, the potential consequences of the misuse of social media, and the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions.
BLOCKED is a special project of Magnus Theatre’s Theatre in Education program created and produced with the generous support of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation and United Way of Thunder Bay’s Youth and Community Program. Teenagers from across Thunder Bay began working on the anti-bullying project in the fall of 2015, with the premise that theatre as an art form, using creative expression and community engagement, can be instrumental in bringing about transformative social change. The project aims to create awareness on bullying as it exists in our high schools and to motivate youth to embrace positive thinking leading to positive action.
BLOCKED follows dual storylines: one set in 1996 before cyber bullying was prevalent, and the other set in 2016. Tim Walters, a male ballet dancer, is faced with a bully at school. Will he learn to cope with the torment or will he be consumed by the negativity surrounding him? Gillian Davis can’t escape her bullies. Anonymity allows them to pursue her ruthlessly, invading her life digitally. BLOCKED is based on local teens’ experiences with bullying, giving the play an authentic youth voice which will leave audiences wondering: bullying has changed drastically over the course of the past few decades, but have we really learned anything?
