Sydney Blu’s career can be considered a journey of evolvement. With a tremendous passion for live performance, music production, and all-around artistic creativity, Sydney’s constant determination shines brightly through her accomplished musical career. With beginnings in Toronto,Canada playing for iconic venues The Guvernment and Footwork Nightclub, her legendary annual performances for the world’s largest PRIDE and a mainstay act in the LGBTQ2+ community, followed by 6 years in the United States touring the continent and the globe, culminating all the way to her recent life in Berlin, Germany, Sydney’s dedication to living her life through her music is unbridled.
Sydney has released music on some of the most recognized labels in the industry including HotSince 82’s Knee Deep in Sound, deadmau5’s Mau5trap, Steve Lawler’s VIVa Music, DesertHearts, Kerri Chandler’s Mad Tech Records, Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records and more. Her release “Give It Up For Me” on Mau5trap Recordings was one of Beatport’s highest selling songs, earning Sydney the rank of first female electronic music producer to have a Top 10 hit on the platform.
After her first solo album, Relentless (2015), the past 6 years have been huge years for SydneyBlu releases. The Canadian artist released and charted top ten on labels like Knee Deep in Sound,Desert Hearts, Yousef’s Circus Recordings, Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records, VIVa Music, Supernova’s Lapsus Music, Roger Sanchez’s Under the Rdr, Josh Butlers Origins, and the legendary melodic house label Katermukke, the record label of Berlin nightclub Katerblau. Toronto techno and house legends Carlo Lio and Nathan Barato invited Sydney onto their imprint Rawthentic Music in 2020 with the release of her Conspiracy EP. The Ep gained heavy support from Spotify being charted on 5 Editorial playlists. Sydney’s music has also received play from house & techno giants Nic Fanciulli, Nicole Moudabar, Jamie Jones, BBC Radio 1’s DannyHoward, Steve Lawler, Carlo Lio, Hot Since 82, Joseph Capriati, Roger Sanchez, Nora En Pure,Chris Lake, Armand Van Helden and many more.
In 2018, Sydney’s first single on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound was premiered by Bill-board Magazine and climbed to the top of the Beatport Tech House chart. It also was the #1 selling song on Knee Deep in Sound’s ADE Sampler and was featured several times at the world-famous Elrow Party. Following this release was another release called ‘Escape’ on the fresh UK label Underground Audio which climbed Top Ten on Beatport. Since then several more of her singles climbed the Beatport charts in recent years like Conspiracy, Temple, Psychedelic High-way, Intuition, and her recent remix of Darin Epsilon’s ‘Lusatia’.
March 2021 was the release of Sydney’s sophomore album Conviction which earned her a JUNO nomination for ‘Electronic Album of the Year’ in 2022, a meticulously produced dance floor driven collection of electronic music, with synth-laden 80’s inspired lead single Monologue featuring Azari & III singer Fritz Helder transitioning into various shades of deep, tech, and melodic house.
Perhaps, her most fully realized body of work to date, Conviction climbed to the top of Beatport Top 10 in Afrohouse, Deep house, Minimal House, Melodic, and Tech house. Her lead singles Conspiracy, Temple, and To the Ground were playlisted on Spotify Editorial Playlists ElectronicRising, Organica, and Housework. The LP also received media praise from outlets Mixmag, 6am Group, Data Transmission, Electronic Groove, Musicis4lovers, Beyond Fashion Magazine, HOLR Fashion Mag, and garnered radio play from Danny Howard of BBC Radio 1, Sirius XMRadio, and CBC Music’s George Stromboulopoulos.
Further to Sydney’s success as an artist, she’s maintained a relentless touring schedule as a DJ. In the spring of 2010, after leaving a long-time residency at Toronto’s Guvernment nightclub, Sydney landed a residency in Miami, Florida. Partnering with Opium Group, Sydney became a resident at Mansion, the hottest club in South Beach at that time. Shortly thereafter, Sydney’s North American performance schedule grew, headlining such major venues as Output (Brooklyn), Pacha (NYC), Stereo (Montreal), Space (Miami), Beta (Denver), Avalon and Ex-change (Los Angeles). Then in November 2011, Sydney performed at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, for the deadmau5’s Meowingtons Hax Tour in front of 35,000 fans, the largest solo headlining dance event in Canadian history. Since then, Sydney has headlined nightclubs and festivals all over the globe including Electric Island Toronto, The BPM Festival Costa Rica and Mexico, Digital Dreams Toronto, Ever After Festival Waterloo, Evolve Festival Halifax, Burning Man, and Ultra Music Festival Miami, and enchanted crowds with performances across Europe, South America, Asia, Tunisia, Pakistan, and Egypt.
Sydney’s event showcase, The Blu Party, originally launched in 2010 during Miami Music Week, has continued annually and is one of the most anticipated events during the week. Featuring A-list headliners who support Sydney’s musical vision, The Blu Party has featured performances from such international names as Pleasurekraft, Riva Starr, Kevin Saunderson, Stacey Pullen, Carlo Lio, Ben Rau, Chus & Ceballos, Yousef, Christian Smith, wAFF, Francesca Lombardo, Nathan Barato, Fur Coat, Desert Hearts, De La Swing of El Row, Serge Devant, Doc Martin, Christian Martin, Kenny Glasgow, Joeski, Black Motion, and Gene Farris. Following a successful inauguration at Detroit’s Movement 2016 weekend and several showcases throughout North America (including a ten-years-running streak at Miami Music Week), the Blu Party is set to continue its underground rein well into 2022 celebrating its tenth anniversary.
Further to her career as a solo artist and DJ, in 2009 Sydney launched her own record label, Blu Music, on the principle of authentic, dance floor rich house and techno. The label quickly became a success, producing several chart-topping singles since its creation featuring releases from several internationally acclaimed artists as well as Sydney herself.
In late 2021 Sydney launched the #23by23 campaign with the help of DJ Rebekah, Native Instruments, Metapop and a run of A-list record labels. The campaigns aim is to encourage labels to increase their percentage of female producers to 23% or more by the end of 2023. To support this initiative, Metapopis hosting remix competitions and demo challenges with some major labels participating in the campaign like SOMA Records, Anjunadeep, Poker Flat Recordings, Hospital Records, Toolroom Records, Club Sweat, Gorgon City’s Realm Records, Soma Records, Desert Hearts, Walker and Royce’s Rules Don’t Apply, Eton Messy, and more.
One of Sydney’s greatest accomplishments to date has been her recent successful advocation for a new category at Canada’s largest award show ‘The JUNO Awards’. For four years, Sydney gathered Canada’s top managers, agents, publicists, festival owners, club owners and artists in dance music to help urge The Canadian Academy of Arts and Sciences to make a new award that represents the origins of electronic music called ‘Underground Dance Single of the Year’. The category was successfully accepted by the JUNO’s in June 2021 and will present its first award in 2022 with Sydney Blu as its Chairwoman.
With no signs of slowing down, expect many new upcoming releases from Sydney Blu in 2022 and a full touring schedule.
