Don’t You(,) Mean People (DYMP for short) was conceived by Taylor Price (guitar), Alex Cummins (drums), and Mack Davis (bass). These 3 friends began experimenting with techniques typical of popular math-rock and post-rock bands such as Piglet from Chicago and Do Make Say Think from Ontario. Having an eclectic taste in music, which extended beyond rock and included jazz, classical, avant-garde, funk, and country, to name a few, these musicians wanted to combine genres in ways which have never been done before. They decided that the band would be acoustic, no distortion, and no special effects. They give their raw acoustic sounds the energy needed so that they could compare in their own special way with the intensity of any other rock band.
Nick Sherman’s songs are characterized by an uneasy, yet always fluid transition between unabashed joy and sorrow. This tension between major and minor is rooted in Nick’s distant memories of his grandfather strumming a guitar in a cabin on the trapline or back at home in the community—the comfort of revisiting these moments are intertwined with the knowledge that they will never happen again. Hailing from Northwestern Ontario, Nick spent his childhood traveling between his birthplace of Sioux Lookout and the remote, First Nation community of Weagamow Lake and North Caribou Lake trapline. After spending 14 years listening to his family play their favourite songs, Nick bought his first guitar and taught himself how to play—to this day he has never taken formal lessons in guitar or singing. Nick spent more than a decade discovering his own music and draws inspiration equally from traditional hymns sung at northern funerals as he does from Tom Waits or William Elliott Whitmore.
Mojave Winter is made up of Craig St. Cyr (vocals/guitar), Rob Hibberd (bass), Simon Paquette (drums) and Jarrett Wallis-Spyrka (guitar). Drawing influences from acts like Thom Yorke, Radiohead and Bob Dylan, Mojave Winter create their own blend of ambient alternative rock. With only a handful of shows under their belt, they are a band to watch out for this year.
