MASSIVE SCAR ERA is an alternative metal band with an Egyptian oriented influence; they introduce pre-colonial Egyptian music to their sound, celebrating the Egyptian identity. What does this mean? The violin, which heavily utilizes Egyptian scales and microtones, does not follow the guidelines set by the Cairo Music Conference (1932), held during the British Colonization of Egypt.
From their formation in 2005, MSE has been heavily involved in supporting gender issues promoting anti-sexual harassment and women empowerment campaigns.
The first ever cross-Canadian tour for Massive Scar Era in support of their upcoming and most complete release yet, Color Blind! And guess what? No Visa required! Released on October 5th, 2018, you can now purchase Color Blind on our Bandcamp page in your digital format of choice.____________________
TBShows.com presents ON THE SCENEBy Jimmy WigginsThe Walleye – Thunder Bay’s Arts & Culture MagazineFrom the September 2018 Issue
Massive Scar Era started out in 2005 in Alexandria, Egypt as the brainchild of guitarist / vocalist, Cherine Amr, a young girl with a passion for music and a love of heavy music. Due to her strict family upbringing, Amr was only allowed to play music with other girls. After a few attempts to form an all-girl band, she unexpectedly met violinist, Nancy Mounir while attending a jazz concert. Little did she know that the two would soon become musical partners in crime for years to come. “Nancy was sitting right next to me and she had her violin with her”, explains Amr, “ she was head banging to the music and I thought she was a metal head just because of how she was reacting so strongly to the music. When I went to greet a friend backstage, I saw Nancy with her violin and I couldn’t help not to ask her if she listens to metal. At that time, Nancy didn’t even understand my question because she didn’t know about the genre. I still wanted to jam with her. We jammed and it was a very interesting experience because we both didn’t speak the same musical language at all. I never thought that she would be my music partner for more than 12 years”.
MSE’s music is influenced by metalcore, hardcore, and melodic death metal and combines them with elements of jazz, Bossa Nova, classical and Egyptian folk and pop music to create a truly unique sounds. Since their inception the band has released several recordings: Reincarnation EP (2006), Unfamiliar Territory EP (2010), Precautionary Measures EP (2011), Come Around You EP (2012), 30 Years EP (2016) and the Color Blind EP (2018) which will be released this October.
They have toured the globe playing several major festivals including Sweden Rock Festival (Sweden), SOS Music Festival (Egypt), Metal Asylum (Dubai, UAE), Slot Art Festival (Poland), SXSW (USA), Inferno Metal Festival (Norway), Total Metal Festival (Italy) and FreakStock Festival (Germany) just to name a few. They’ve shared stages with metal giants like Dream Theatre, Dimmu Borgir, Kreator, Moonspell, Tyr and Orphaned Land among many others. They band even had a music placement in the Egyptian Award Winning film, Microphone and have landed an endorsement deal with Skate Impact (Egypt).
Since day one MSE has been heavily involved in supporting gender issues and promoting anti-sexual harassment and women empowerment campaigns. On tour they’ve experience first hand that racial profiling is alive and well yet they continue to share their sound with the world. “I’m politically active, not by choice. I think anyone that grew up in Egypt has to be, especially if you are a woman”, explains Amr, “Nancy and I are Egyptians which means touring is always difficult and visas are expensive and always a pain. We have been turned away from entering the USA to play SXSW because Donald Trump, at that time, released the travel ban and the borders were flagging middle Easterns”.
Massive Scar Era will be making a stop in Thunder Bay on their No Visa Required Tour, October 24th at Black Pirates Pub in support of the new EP, Color Blind.
