TBSO Classical Plus: Passion & Enlightenment

On Wednesday, November 6, at 8pm, at Hilldale Lutheran Church, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra’s Classical Plus Series launches with Passion & Enlightenment, featuring TBSO Clarinetist E-Chen Hsu.
This season’s Classical Plus Series focuses on the music of Joseph Haydn. In the late 1760s Haydn began writing symphonies the likes of which had not been heard before. The new music was impulsive, driven, and openly emotional. There were dark, brooding pieces in minor keys, and bright exuberant ones in major. Heard today this music sounds pretty unbuttoned for a guy who wore a white wig. It’s delightfully direct and down-to-earth. We’ve paired Haydn’s dark and bright symphonies on each program with other engaging pieces that share these exciting qualities.
