The Fugitives, a potent B.C. cocktail of jazz, folk, soul, rock and spoken word, have played over 100 inspiring live shows, and are now coming to TBAY!The Fugitives awaken audiences with their unique combination of three part harmony, athletic performance poetry, and skilful musicianship. Vancouverites Barbara Adler, Mark Berube, and Brendan McLeod, are each singer-songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and award winning performance poets who have merged their diverse styles into one distinct mixture of poetry and song backed by accordion, guitar, piano, banjo, and melodica. A group of road dogs, they have toured four times through Europe and twice through Canada since the group’s inception two years ago. This year, the Fugitives were the recipients of a grant from the Canadian Council of the Arts Storytelling Program. Between them, they have won both the Vancouver and Canadian SLAM poetry championships, as well as the Banned in Canada battle of the bands series, and performed at over a thirty international poetry and music festivals across North America and Europe. Their previous album, ‘Shadowbox Choir’ has received radio play across Canada, on both the CBC and college radio stations, as well as in the United Kingdom. Their newest release will be available in March, and features collaborations with members of the Be Good Tanyas, Po’ Girl, TOFU, The Breakmen, Salt, and Microscopic. The Fugitives are a live act that compels its audience to think, care, and first and foremost, celebrate. After quickly gaining credence for their inimitable ability to make people dance to poetry, they were called in to perform for Sheryl McKay, host of CBC’s North by Northwest. “Oh my!” she exclaimed. “I can see why they’re jumping off the tables for you!”
